This month we are discussing the city of Oyo. Not to be confused with Oyo State or the Oyo Empire. Though Oyo City is in Oyo State and is a remnant of the Oyo empire. What a mouthful.
The ancient city of Oyo has so much historical significance to Yorubas, Nigeria and Africa at large. Oyo city is the home of the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo. The palace itself is more than 200 years old and full of rich history and context.

The palace served as the cultural, spiritual, political and military hub of the great Oyo empire. The structure itself is a marvel and contains much of the original architecture including carved wood doors and fixtures and several open courtyards that once served as markets and sites of festivals and religious ceremonies. When visiting Oyo city, the palace is a must see. The new Alaafin has spoken of his intention to renovate this great residence.
Oyo city is also known for decorated calabash. Calabashes are containers made from the shell of dried gourds. Calabash making is a specialty. There are many trees in Nigeria that produce the gourds (fruit) used to make calabash. The gourds are picked and cut, and the seeds are removed. The remaining shell is then left to sun dry. Once dry the shells are decorated and ready to use for whatever purpose: utensils, serving bowls, drink bottles.
Calabash making is an artform. The marketplace in Oyo city has some of the most beautiful and intricately decorated and engraved Calabash available in Nigeria. Calabashes are more than just functional pieces but also unique home décor items that highlight an important cultural tradition.
